Darragh Whelan wrapped up a busy and enormously successful track season by winning bronze in the School International 1500m in Belfast on Saturday. In a slow tactical race Darragh was never more than a stride or two behind the leader and when the hammer dropped at 700m to go was the only athlete capable of going with the two English competitors. It was neck and neck around the final bend with the English lads just pulling away from Darragh down the home straight. It was a fantastic result for Darragh as he is still a first year Intermediate and will be young enough to compete again next year.
Darragh also had the honour of being named as the Irish Boys Team Captain along side Holly Renton who was the Girls Captain. Both managed to get their hands on some Scottish gear showing the true spirit of athletics is not just about the winning, but also the making of friends and the blagging other teams kit.
