The club was honoured to host a night to celebrate the trail blazing women of Limerick AC last week. Five of the original founding women members of the club were present to be remembered for both their work and performances in establishing female athletes in Limerick in the 1960s. The five women present on the night were Mary Cronin (President of Limerick), Patsy O’Regan, Mary Flanaghan, Tess Kelly and Patsy Sheehan. Joan Kelly (who lives in Canada and was not present on the night) was also recognised as was Breda Shaughnessy, who was sadly passed away. They were joined by members of the club, past and present, friends and family to celebrate their contribution to the sport and their successes down the years. Showing that age is no barrier to sport, Mary Cronin still competes in the annual Cook Mini Marathon.
While presenting each of the ladies was presented with a framed photograph of themselves from the early 1960s, PJ O’Rourke (chairperson) thanked the women for the legacy they have left and for acting as roll models to all those women who have come behind them.
