There was great success for the club on Days 1 and 2 of the National Juvenile Indoor Championships held in Athlone at the weekend with three gold medals, a silver and three bronze and many more personal bests.

The first medal on Saturday went to Zara Coman in the u14 girls high jump whose first time clearance at 1.45 earned her a bronze medal. Zara’s medal was quickly followed by a gold for her brother Killian in the u15 boys 800m. Killian ran a great tactical race sitting in 3rd for the first 3 laps before making his move with a lap to go and holding off the rest of the field. A few races later Darragh Whelan won the u16 boys 800m although in different style. Darragh took the lead from the gun and simply ran away from the rest of the field over the last two laps to win in a Champion Record time.

There were also personal bests for John Farrell who was 4th in the u17 boys 800m as well as from Dáire O’Dwyer in the same event and Aidan Dillon in the u18 boys 800m. In the girls 800m, Gabriella O’Neill, Crea Moore and Rachel Ryan all ran strongly in their heat of the u14 girls race but were unfortunately outside the medals which were won from the other heat. In the u15 girls 800m Cate O’Brien was 3rd in her heat.

The final events on Saturday where the 60mH where Conor Oliver and George O’Brien completed a 1-2 for the club winning gold and silver respectively in the u13boys event, while Charlie Smith made it a full set of medals winning bronze in the u14 boys race.

On Sunday Conall O’Cearnaigh won bronze in the u12 boys Shot Put while Fionn Cunningham was 4th in the u18boys 400m.

Congratulations to all the athletes who took part and thanks to all the coaches who helped nurture their talent. Good luck to all our athletes competing on Day 3 on the 11th of April.
